Found asbestos on site? Here is what to do next

Asbestos was used widely in UK buildings until the late 1990s, so it still turns up in roofs, garages, insulation board, floor tiles and textured coatings. If you think you have found it, the most important rule is simple. Do not disturb it.

Asbestos is only dangerous when fibres are released into the air, which happens when materials are broken, drilled, cut or swept. Left intact, it is far less of a risk. So stop work in that area, keep people away, and avoid creating dust.

Do not try to remove it yourself. Asbestos removal is a licensed activity for good reason. A qualified team will identify the material, assess the risk, and produce a method statement before anything is touched. Waste must go to authorised facilities, with documentation kept for your records.
